Axelrod: "We're going to continue to unfurl these endorsements on a regular basis."

Sun May 11, 2008 at 11:07:26 AM PDT

David Axelrod appeared on Fox News Sunday this morning (a Reuters reporter watched it so we did not have to) and announced that the Obama campaign will continue to announce committed superdelegates in the days ahead.

"You're going to see people (superdelegates) making decisions at a rapid pace from this point on," he said. "We've been announcing several each day for the last few days. We're going to continue to unfurl these endorsements on a regular basis."

Days like Friday (when nine superdelegates announced for Obama) will happen again.  Several sources, including DemConWatch, CBS, the AP, and the New York Times, now have Obama leading Clinton amongst superdelegates.  If Axelrod's comment this morning is accurate, that lead will widen in the days to come.

By the Obama campaign's own count, the nomination is 155 delegates away.  While the superdelegates will make up the most of this margin, the campaign is also just 33 pledged delegates away from assuring a majority of pledged delegates.

There is still work to do to achieve this majority as soon as possible.  This week's primary in West Virginia will no doubt see Hillary Clinton win a majority of the state's pledged delegates, but we can still work to ensure that Barack Obama gets every possible delegate.

Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray agrees, and sent this e-mail:

I wanted to reach out to you before Tuesday's contest in West Virginia.

Folks like you were the heart and soul of this movement in the Buckeye State. You brought Barack to an unexpectedly close finish on March 4th -- and helped build the momentum that's resonating all across the country.

We have a clear path to the nomination, but there's still more to do to finish this race -- and we can't take anything for granted.

The West Virginia primary is coming up this Tuesday, May 13th. Supporters like you from nearby states are needed to take the trip and make a difference for Barack one more time.

You've been there for Barack before -- now let us know you can come to West Virginia in the next four days:

In contests across the country, home-state supporters have worked their hearts out for Barack -- but they've relied on folks like you from nearby states to help them cross the finish line.

You've already shown your commitment to grassroots organizing, and you know that change only happens when everyday Americans come together to work for it.

This could be our best chance to make an impact for Barack before primary season ends -- can we count on you to take the drive to West Virginia in time for Primary Day?

Thank you again for all that you've done.

On May 20, Oregon and Kentucky vote.  Again, Hillary Clinton is likely to get the majority of delegates from Kentucky, but the Obama campaign is working to get every delegate possible out of the process.  Kentucky field  director Lauren Kidwell sent this message late last week:

On Tuesday, Barack won a decisive victory in North Carolina and finished stronger than anyone expected in Indiana.

Right now, you can help carry our momentum forward in Kentucky.

There are only six primaries left, and this is one of the biggest. Here in the Bluegrass State, we can secure some of the final available delegates and move a big step closer to the nomination -- but we need your help.

With only 12 days to go until election day, I hope that you'll join us in Kentucky -- just as so many of you did in North Carolina and Indiana -- and go door-to-door to build our movement here.

We have thousands of potential supporters to reach, and no time to waste, so sign up to come to Kentucky and Get Out The Vote for Barack:

When you come to Kentucky, you'll see that we have a strong base of support here, with 16 Obama offices and hundreds of local volunteers working hard for Barack every day.

But in contests across the country, home-state supporters haven't done it alone -- they've relied on folks like you from nearby states to help them reach the finish line.

We'll need you one more time in Kentucky.

No prior political experience is required -- just a belief in Barack's message of change, and a willingness to spread the word one voter at a time.

Help us win as many votes and delegates as we can -- come Get Out The Vote in Kentucky:

Thank you for all that you've done,

Lauren

P.S. -- Make an even bigger difference by recruiting other supporters to join us in Kentucky, too.

Our team has put together a list of supporters and volunteers who live in states near Kentucky, and you can use our simple online tool to call and encourage them to travel to Kentucky in the final days before May 20th.

Whether or not you can join us in the Bluegrass State yourself, make sure we have the grassroots support we'll need to finish strongly -- call fellow supporters from near Kentucky and recruit them to come Get Out The Vote:

It appears the national campaign is taking care of business on the superdelegate front and will continue to get the campaign closer to the nomination with announcements of more superdelegate commitments in the days to come.  As they do that, we can help by fighting for whatever delegates can be had in the few states left to vote.

One other thing Axelrod said this morning is worth quoting. Summing up the race, he said:

"we're coming to the end of the process."

Let's be like the campaign's leaders and work to give Barack Obama the strongest possible finish to this process.
